I have received the attached letter from the Minister of Advanced Education in response to my letter regarding recent Board of Governors appointments (attached). In my view, the Minister of Advanced Education has not addressed my queries in his response.
AASUA Executive is scheduled to meet with the Minister in early December. At that meeting, amongst other concerns, I will pursue this issue and report to you following that meeting.
The Provincial Budget was delivered yesterday and it contains substantial cuts to Alberta post-secondary institutions. This is unwelcome news. We have endured numerous cuts from the government over a number of years, and from our own administration in years when the government did not cut the Campus Alberta grant. We should not be targeted to bear the burden of the present cuts, for the reason that it will directly affect the quality of education we provide to Albertans, and…

Alberta Legislature Steps
I ask AASUA members to join the AUPE Rally at the Legislature steps on October 18 at 5 pm – 6 pm to fight back against cuts!
The Alberta Government has released the MacKinnon Report and Recommendations on Alberta’s Finances.
We anticipate cuts to the University of Alberta and to other post-secondary institutions in the province when the budget is released on October 24.
We all must fight in solidarity for quality post-secondary education.
I encourage you to…
The Collective Agreement expires on June 30, 2020 and the AASUA is preparing for the next round of bargaining that will commence in the new year.
On the recommendation of Executive, Council has appointed the members of the Negotiating Team. Gordon Swaters has been appointed the Lead Negotiator. Heather Bruce, Camille Laforest, and Rachel Milner have been appointed members of the Negotiating Team.
Directors have started developing bargaining priorities for their…
AASUA Council adopted the following motion:
“Recognizing the urgency of taking concerted action on climate change, the AASUA expresses its solidarity with Global Climate Strike 2019.”
On September 27, 2019, there will be a walkout by U of A students from their classes at 11:30 am to join strikers at the main quad. This group will march from campus to the legislature — across the high-level bridge.
AASUA members who are able to join this march can find more…
I have received a letter from President Turpin in response to my request for additional information and further clarification regarding the report we received entitled “Gender-based Pay Differences Amongst Faculty University of Alberta 2014-2017”. His response was that the University will not provide AASUA any further information about the calculation of the gender-pay-equity remedy. President Turpin’s letter is posted here.
As many of you may be aware, on August 16 the Alberta Government replaced dozens of members on Boards of Governors at several Alberta post-secondary institutions. The U of A was no exception, with a new Board Chair and five additional new Board members named. The former Board Chair, Michael Phair, and other replaced Board members were in mid-term. I have sent the attached letter to the Minister of Advanced Education asking for a rationale for this rapid, wholesale change.…
Yesterday, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Eric Macklin ruled a suspension of the Alberta Public Sector Wage Arbitration Deferral Act (Bill 9), legislation that postponed wage talks until October 30. The Alberta government will likely appeal the decision. By granting the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) an interim injunction against Bill 9, the ruling allows contractually agreed to arbitration talks for 65,000 AUPE members to proceed. Macklin wrote in the decision that “A member of…
I have requested that the University Administration provide additional information and further clarification regarding the report we received entitled “ Gender-based Pay Differences Amongst Faculty University of Alberta 2014-2017”, which I posted to AASUA members in an AASUA President’s message, dated June 28th. I have made this additional request to the University Administration in full, as presented to me by our members (names redacted), in a communication I received and that appears in the…
Dear AASUA Members
Further to my prior message to you, I attach the letter sent to the Minister of Labour by CAFA and its member Presidents of University Faculty Associations in the Province of Alberta, regarding Bill 9.
Bill 9 breaches negotiated collective agreements achieved in good faith between employers and unions. Also, Bill 9 represents direct interference by the government of Alberta in collective bargaining in this province and very likely violates employees’ Charter rights.
