On December 20, 2019, the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta (BOG) gave notice to AASUA that, in 2020, it plans to lay off some number of academic staff, yet to be determined, within the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS), Trust Research Academic Staff (TRAS), Administrative and Professional Officer (APO), and Temporary Librarian, Administrative and Professional Officer (TLAPS) constituency groups.
The BOG has stated that lay offs will occur based on a reduction to its Campus Alberta Grant for the 2019 – 2020 year, and possibly future years.
AASUA Executive strongly disagrees with the BOG’s position that lay offs are required. Our members are essential for the delivery of front line activities at the University. It can be asked how the BOG intends to provide the same or better standards of high quality research and teaching at the University of Alberta, if it eliminates academic staff. The BOG should look elsewhere within their budget for their desired savings.
The BOG has the right to lay off academic staff from these constituency groups but must adhere to the processes stipulated in the Collective Agreement. AASUA is the bargaining agent for academic staff, has the right to be notified, and will fairly represent members who face potential lay off and/or reorganization.
If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact firstname.lastname@example.org who will direct you to a Labour Relations Officer for advice and representation.
