Today at noon, President Turpin made a presentation in Council Chambers outlining the proposed cuts from the government for the U of A from within the Campus Alberta grant.
Included in his presentation was a description of the financial situation of the University. At his presentation, the President ruled out voluntary severance and retirement packages as a component to addressing the budget cuts. Some of the approaches to the budget cuts will involve some level of increase to tuition for students, increases in enrollment, and a variety of new efficiencies.
The budget cuts from the government are coming at the same time that the first component of the new budget model for the University is going to be implemented. This will prove a challenge.
It appears that the University’s deferred maintenance will be covered in operating funds going forward. This will also prove a challenge for the University’s operations.
AASUA will gain more information with respect to the University’s budget and its interpretation of its surpluses from the Joint Committee on University Planning and Budgets when it meets tomorrow. Furthermore, AASUA Executive has received a commitment from Drs. Janet Morrill and Cameron Morrill to provide a financial analysis of the University’s budget. Janet and Cameron are experts in financial analysis of university budgets. They are faculty members of the University of Manitoba.
