Preface

AASUA will always staunchly defend our members’ rights as outlined in our Collective Agreement. The principles of Academic Freedom are essential for the functioning of our university and for achieving the core mission of teaching and research our institution prides itself on.

Our union is not the critic or arbiter on matters of debate among its members. Rather, AASUA’s role is to enable our diverse membership to critique, comment, question, and investigate without deference to prescribed doctrine. We do this through bargaining for Academic Freedom protections in our Collective Agreement and defending our members through grievance and arbitration. Often, for legal reasons, the latter work must take place behind the scenes with respect to the confidentiality of members’ individual cases.

In the interest of educating AASUA members about their Academic Freedom rights, we have created this Toolkit. It highlights key components of Academic Freedom as protected by AASUA and what action members can take should they believe their academic freedom has been infringed upon.
