Brygeda Renke is the Executive Director and General Counsel for the AASUA. She first joined the AASUA in December 2007 and took on the role of Executive Director in July 2010.

She graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA (Distinction) in 1982 and obtained her LLB from the University of Alberta in 1985. She is a member of the Law Society of Alberta in good standing with over 30 years of legal experience, with a focus in civil litigation and labour law.

She has extensive experience in the post-secondary sector and provides legal advice to the AASUA. She serves as a resource to AASUA's Negotiations Team for collective bargaining. She represents the AASUA on all matters arising from the collective agreement, including grievances, appeals, arbitrations, and discipline matters.

As well, she is responsible for all management, personnel, and financial matters, and is responsible for the effective delivery of all AASUA services and administrative duties associated with her role as Chief Administrative Officer for the AASUA.

On October 30, 2017, Brygeda was appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council as a member of the Alberta Labour Relations Board for a three year term. She was reappointed to another three year term ending October 30, 2023.

Roxanne Rowe

Associate Director, Operations

Roxanne joined the AASUA in 1995 after several years of administrative work in banking and health services in Calgary. Roxanne has held several positions in AASUA prior to being appointed Associate Director, Operations in 2015.

As the Associate Director, Operations, Roxanne is responsible for all financial, governance and human resource strategies, plans, and initiatives, and for the effective delivery of administrative support systems associated with her role. She provides strategic and operational advice and guidance, and promotes innovation and the exploration of new initiatives within the association.

Roxanne has been a member of the Canadian Organization of Faculty Association Staff for nearly 25 years and has been an annual conference contributor and co-presenter since 2008. Roxanne is currently completing requirements for her C.I.M. Designation, which recognizes academic qualification and experience acquired in the field of management.

Leanne Rosinski profile image

Leanne Rosinski

Associate Director, Labour Relations

Leanne Rosinski is the Associate Director, Labour Relations, at the AASUA and oversees the services provided by labour relations officers to over 4,000 academic staff while providing advice and strategic counsel to the executive director on labour relations issues affecting the membership. She is responsible for developing collaborative relationships with the employer while ensuring the terms of the collective agreements are upheld. Leanne leads the case management and grievance processes for the AASUA, including arbitration hearings.

Leanne has extensive labour relations and human resources experience in both management and union roles and is skilled in negotiation and conflict resolution. She also has an in-depth understanding of the research-intensive, post-secondary environment due to her 14 years as an academic advisor and cognitive strategies instructor. Leanne received her Bachelor of Education in 1994 and taught elementary and junior high school before she transitioned to the university teaching environment. Leanne holds a Master of Laws in Labour Relations and Employment Law, and certificates in labour relations, labour-management relations, and grievances and arbitrations, and is involved in collective bargaining.

Leanne is also a Professional Investigator licensed through Alberta Justice and Solicitor General.

Associate Director, Negotiations

Terry is the Associate Director, Negotiations and is a valuable resource for the AASUA’s Negotiations Team.

In 1983 Terry was hired as the first instructor in the Water Wastewater program at Westerra Institute of Technology. As a brand new institute, Westerra did not have a collective agreement and used NAIT’s (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s) collective agreement. Terry was part of the faculty bargaining team that negotiated the first collective agreement at Westerra.

NAIT took over Westerra in 1989-90 and Terry represented the Westerra Faculty Association in negotiations with the Alberta Government and NAIT’s Academic Staff Association (NASA). After Westerra had become part of NAIT, he joined NASA’s bargaining team in 1991.

In 1994-95 while serving as the Chair of collective bargaining for NASA, Terry joined Alberta Colleges and Institutes Faculties Association’s (ACIFA) Executive board as the Vice-President Negotiations which led to his appointment as the Director of Labour Relations. During Terry’s time with ACIFA he has negotiated somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 collective agreements and has represented members in hundreds of grievances.

In 2016, Terry was awarded the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) Donald C. Savage Award for his significant contributions to collective bargaining in post-secondary education.

Aly Koskela

Senior Labour Relations Officer

Aly represents AASUA members and advises them in all matters affecting their employment relationship with the University of Alberta. As Senior Labour Relations Officer, Aly advocates for members on contract interpretation matters and responds to members’ ongoing concerns and enquiries in matters such as: disciplinary investigations; faculty evaluations and appeals; harassment and discrimination concerns; disability and accommodation questions; and grievance procedures.

In addition to completing her degrees at the University of Alberta, Aly has held various positions across campus since 2012, and was proud to found the East Asian Studies Undergraduate Student Association, KGK, as well as serve as a Graduate Student Association representative while undertaking her graduate studies.

David Johnson profile image

David C. Johnson

Senior Labour Relations Officer

David Johnson is a Senior Labour Relations Officer who represents AASUA members and advises them in matters affecting their employment relationship with the University of Alberta. He received his A.B. from Bates College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Latin American history from the University of California, Berkeley.

David is a Professor Emeritus who has worked at the University of Alberta since 1970. Since the early 80’s he has served the AASUA in a variety of capacities including Council, Executive, member and Chair of the Academic Welfare Committee (which evolved into the Members’ Advisory Committee on which he also served and was Chair), member of the Teaching and Joint Benefits Committee as well as President of the AASUA.

Apart from his teaching and research, David also served on a wide variety of University committees and in administrative capacities at the department, faculty and university level. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Harry Crowe Foundation on which he has served for thirteen years, six of them as president.

David recently retired from the University of Alberta and brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to the AASUA.

Shelagh Prowse profile image

Shelagh Ayers

Administrative Assistant

Shelagh is the Administrative Assistant supporting the staff as well as AASUA's administrative operations. She graduated with distinction from the Legal Assistant Program at Grant MacEwan University in 2011 and gained valuable experience working for two and a half years at law firms.

She decided to continue her post-secondary education at the University of Alberta and worked for the AASUA during the summer between her third and fourth years of study.

Shelagh joined the AASUA after graduating from the University of Alberta in 2016 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. Her legal assistant skills are a valuable asset to the AASUA particularly for grievance and arbitration files, and when providing administrative support to the Negotiations Team.
