Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to announce Terra Garneau, AASUA’s Equity Officer, has been awarded the Canadian Association of University Teachers’ (CAUT) Equity Award.

Above: Terra Garneau, AASUA Equity Officer.

Established in 2010, the award recognizes academic staff and groups who have done exceptional work making post-secondary education more inclusive.

The announcement from CAUT Council reads:

“The CAUT Equity Committee is pleased to recommend Terra Garneau, the Association of Academic Staff University of Alberta (AASUA) Equity Officer, for CAUT’s Equity Award. Through her work as Equity Officer, Garneau played a central role in spearheading the creation of an equity article in AASUA’s Collective Agreement, an essential step forward for preventing discrimination and achieving better representation of all equity-deserving groups at the university.

When the University went through a massive restructuring because of significant budget cuts, Terra led AASUA advocacy efforts for the use of a Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) framework to guide decisions and undertook the GBA+ work to show how the restructuring most adversely affected those from equity-deserving groups. Terra also led the AASUA Equity Survey to inform collective bargaining.

In the words of one of her nominators, ‘Garneau ensures equity-deserving members are considered not just in every union decision, but in every internal union conversation. Her work has made postsecondary education in Alberta more inclusive and set a national precedent for what academic staff unions can strive to accomplish.’

The Equity Committee is honoured to recommend Terra Garneau for the 2024 CAUT Equity Award.”

Congratulations to Terra, whose exceptional work as Equity Officer has created a strong foundation for the essential and ongoing work of advancing equity at our university through union advocacy.
